The game of starts was invented in England in the middle ages, but has changed a lot over the
years.
The version of the game we know and love today was invented in 1896 by author and carpenter Brian
Hamlin.
Back then the targets were made of wood, elm or poplar.
In 1898, a “folded-paper” target was patented by an American and the system of numbering on the
dartboard was formulated and accepted.
Since 1932, most targets for darts also have a layer of steel on them to help segment the board
into sections, which makes scoring easier.
The first official tournament for darts was held in 1927.
It really wasn't until after WWII that many of the rules of darts became
standardized
The international throwing line of 7 ft. 9 1/4 inches was established in the 1970s to make it standard
for international competitions.
But it was 2010 before women played at the annual World Darts
Championship
Now people all around the world can enjoy the sport of darts in international competitions, in leagues,
or in private parties and all be on an equal footing.
